I am constantly inspired by watching people move around spaces, whether they are meandering through a shopping centre, navigating a busy crossing or marching across a field.
What motivates me to make work is a desire to frame those moments of careless beauty and draw attention to them: to share what I see in the world and an appreciation of the physicality of moving.
Alongside choreographing, I have also worked as Rehearsal Director for Tabula Rasa Dance and as an Assistant Director for All or Nothing Aerial Dance. More recently I have been working as a Dramturg for Rob Heaslip and his show, FREAGRA/in response. I have also taken a creative part in Land of Giants (dir by Mark Murphy) and was Assistant Director on White Gold, produced by Iron Oxide, created by Mark Murphy and directed by Simone Jenkinson & Joseph Traynor.
Recent Work:
Sleeper
Sleeper is my on-going exploration inspired initially by the sound of foghorns where I grew up by the sea.....it is a collaborative project with visual artist, Paul Charlton and composer Quee MacArthur, with the support of dancers Christine Devaney, Emma Snellgrove, Michael Sherin, Jen Paterson, Rob Heaslip, Jen Farmer and musician Dave Ford.
Two periods of research & development have ensued so far.....the first supported by Dance Base in Edinburgh and the second supported by Creative Scotland in early 2014, when the company was resident at Scottish Ballet Studios at Tramway, Glasgow. Part of the research period was completed in conjunction with Cuerda Producciones, an aerial theatre company based in Buenos Aires, where I visited with the help of the Lisa Ullman Travel Scholarship Fund.
The finished performance is hoped to be completed early in 2016.
Past Projects:
Choreographic Futures
In 2014 I was awarded a Choreographic Futures Award through the National Dance Agencies in Scotland to travel to Argentina to work with Cuerda Producciones on how to choreograph with a visual stimulus rather than a movement one. What ensued was a self imposed film and video workshop, creating a series of short films.
something together
something together is a collaborative project with dance artist, Skye Reynolds, looking at how we negotiate our relationship and the tensions which can arise. We are using movement and text in as exploratory way as possible and pushing our own personal boundaries as to how we make work.
We have completed a research period already and hope to complete the work in the autumn of 2015.
FREAGRA/in response
FREAGRA/in response is a full-length work being developed by choreographer, Rob Heaslip. I am currently working on this as a dramaturg. For more information, please click here.
